Two weeks into this role, and I can say without hesitation: this is the most important work of my life.
I have witnessed a lot over the years. Widespread destruction, conflict, crises that leave behind lasting scars. Many of these tragedies have, in some ways, been normalized. But in the past two weeks, I learned something profound: the power of simply showing up. The force of individuals united in collective action. The quiet but life-changing impact of giving hope and resolution to people in the most fragile chapter of their lives.
It is powerful. It is deeply human.
Serving in Texas with nearly 200 Greyshirts felt strangely familiar. The camaraderie, the esprit de corps, the rituals—it felt like coming home.
Perhaps I should have expected it. Here was a group of volunteers, most meeting for the first time, descending on disaster zones and within hours, becoming a high-performing team delivering tangible relief. Together, we supported Kerr County and Tom Green County, two very different disasters caused by the same common enemy: water.
In Kerr County, water ripped violently through a beautiful valley, sweeping away lives and property in an instant. In Tom Green County, it crept slowly into neighborhoods, submerging homes under 8 feet of water. In both, the need was urgent.
Our work at Team Rubicon does not happen by accident. It happens because the human spirit comes alive when it matters most. Our Greyshirts give their time, their sweat, and their hearts. Our partners equip us with resources and tools. Supporters across the country and around the world invest in us. And communities open their doors, offering access, trust, and often a place to lay our heads.
All of it magically and powerfully comes together so that we can serve. So that we can be a source of stability and relief for survivors in their most vulnerable moments.
Two weeks in, and I am not the same person. I have felt the humbling power of compassion in action. I’ve witnessed lives changed, silently and profoundly.
To the TRibe: thank you.
To our partners, advocates, and supporters: thank you.
To the communities who welcome us in and trust us with your hardest days: thank you.
We will keep showing up.
