Covering a massive, demographically diverse swath of the continental U.S. (plus Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), the North Branch is as hazard-prone as they come.

And with densely populated cities and rural towns in equal measure, tackling the area’s frequent hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, Nor’Easters, and severe thunderstorms requires a nuanced approach.

As we’ve launched more and more ops in this region, it’s served as an essential proving ground for our capabilities. When Superstorm Sandy struck New York and New Jersey in 2012, our early-stage organization mounted a large-scale, highly publicized response that brought hope to millions and kickstarted some much-needed fundraising and recruiting.

Was this a “make or break” moment? Yes. Did we make it? Absolutely.

Since that pivotal all-eyes-on-us, all-hands-on-deck moment, we’ve been tirelessly serving communities big and small. Thanks to the steadfast dedication of local Greyshirts, we’ve confronted the Flint Water Crisis, aided with Afghan Resettlement operations, pitched in with COVID-19 testing and vaccinations, and more. And as our organization continues to grow, so does our ability to help the people who call this region home.
