For Disaster Relief, a Year of Impact

Julie H. Case

As 2024 comes to a close, here’s a first look at Team Rubicon’s accomplishments for the year.

As 2024 draws closer to its end, Team Rubicon is reflecting on a year of historic disasters and the disaster survivors our volunteers—or Greyshirts—have served so far. From the start of the year through October 31, our veteran-led disaster relief nonprofit has already served nearly 3 million individuals across 713 communities. While we’re still closing the books on response this year—and three Hurricane Helene and Milton operations remain ongoing—here’s a glance at what Team Rubicon accomplished over the first 10 months of the year.

89 Disaster Relief Operations Completed

From our first disaster response of the year—responding to flooding in Maine in January—to our last wildfire mitigation operation of the year in Colorado’s Coal Creek Canyon community, as of October 31, 2024, Team Rubicon had already completed 89 disaster response operations in 2024.

That’s not all. Even as 2024 comes to a close, more than five dozen  Greyshirts remain on the ground on Hurricanes Milton and Helene response operations in Georgia and South Carolina.

2.9+ Million People Served

From January through October 2024, Team Rubicon Greyshirts served nearly 3 million people, helping them recover from hurricanes, wildfires, flooding, and more.

More Than 700 Communities Served in Less Than 1 Year

From January through October, Team Rubicon’s reach was vast, serving 713 communities across the country in just 10 months. Whether in urban centers or remote areas, the organization demonstrated its ability to adapt and respond wherever the need arose.

Nearly $6.4 Million Worth of Volunteer Labor and Hours

The dedication of Team Rubicon’s volunteers was evident in the numbers: Greyshirts contributed a staggering 206,787 hours of volunteer labor, valued at more than $6,398,076. This labor included everything from clearing debris and mucking out homes to providing logistical support during disaster operations.

15 Homes Rebuilt

In addition to disaster relief and recovery, Team Rubicon focused on long term recovery efforts by rebuilding homes for disaster survivors. Over the past 10 months, the organization rebuilt 15 homes, providing families with safe and secure places to live after disasters left them displaced.

235 Training Events

A strong foundation of preparedness is essential for effective disaster response, and Team Rubicon’s commitment to training reflects this belief. Through October of 2024, 235 training events were hosted—both in-person and online—providing Greyshirts with critical skills such as chainsaw operation, debris management, and incident command systems.

700+ Service Projects in 48 States

Team Rubicon’s Greyshirts don’t just respond to disasters at the national level, they serve in their own backyards, too. By the end of October, Greyshirts had already completed 728 service projects in 48 states, as well as Puerto Rico and DC. These initiatives extended the organization’s mission of supporting communities, whether by building wheelchair ramps, clearing hazardous debris, or helping with other essential tasks. Each project underscored the organization’s commitment to improving lives and strengthening community resilience.

As Team Rubicon looks ahead to the remainder of the year and beyond, the organization remains steadfast in its mission. With every operation, service project, and volunteer engagement, Team Rubicon reaffirms its promise to serve, to support, and to make a lasting difference.
