Service is an Instinct

Dave Rokes

Read about how going on an Operation with Team Rubicon left USCG veteran Dave Rokes feeling thankful and impacted.

As I sit down to unwind for the first time in several hours, I am hot, sweaty, and dirty, but most of all, I am thankful. Thankful, for the opportunity to serve alongside some of the most amazing people this country has to offer. Thankful for the opportunity to help those in need. But selfishly, I am most thankful for the opportunity to be a part of something so much bigger than myself.

I was one of the blessed and lucky few that got to retire early. From the time I was 19 until I was 56, the Coast Guard gave me the opportunity to be a part of a great organization and make a positive difference on our country and our world. Team Rubicon does the same for me now.

Every operation I have been on has had outstanding camaraderie and delivered incredible results for the communities we serve. Operation Tridge was no exception. The command staff were superb. They provided excellent leadership, guidance, and mentorship. Every person that expressed a desire to learn a new skill set, or test their leadership, was provided with that opportunity. Safety, respect, and teamwork were stressed and expected at every level.

To witness firsthand the hard work, dedication, commitment, and unselfish help for those in need by our Greyshirts is beyond words. You can’t teach or train people to love and care for total strangers.

I always feel guilty at the end of the day when people are so thankful for the work we have done on their property. In reality, it is me that is truly thankful to be on the receiving end of the physical and emotional benefits that come with being part of Team Rubicon. Alone, a person can make a little difference. With a team of like minded individuals, that force multiplier can change a community, a state, the country, and the world.
