Beginning April 1, 2025, Team Rubicon Greyshirts will boldly go where no disaster relief volunteer has gone before: Space.

Team Rubicon, the disaster relief organization known for deploying military veterans and first responders to critical humanitarian missions across Earth, today announced Operation Rubigeddon, a groundbreaking asteroid defense operation to mitigate the potential threat of asteroids, including Asteroid 2024 YR4.

In December 2024, researchers identified Asteroid 2024 YR4, initially classified as a potential “city-killer asteroid” with a projected impact in 2032. Although scientific assessments have since reduced the strike probability to less than 1%, Team Rubicon remains committed to its core principle: all possible disasters deserve mitigation.

“When humanity faces an unprecedented threat, Team Rubicon volunteers are ready to serve,” said Art delaCruz, CEO of Team Rubicon, of the new asteroid defense and mitigation operation. “Disasters don’t wait, and neither do we—even in space. Operation Rubigeddon represents our organization’s commitment to protecting not just communities, but our entire planet.”

For 15 years, Team Rubicon has responded to disasters and humanitarian crises on Earth. For the past several years, it has also been developing a highly classified set of capabilities to respond to threats from asteroids, meteors, and falling space debris. On April 1, 2025, the veteran-led disaster relief nonprofit will launch Operation Rubigeddon. While Greyshirts on Earth will help their communities prepare for a possible asteroid impact, other Greyshirts are being selected to deploy for asteroid defense and mitigation operations at the newly-formed Moon Operation Center—also known as the MOC.

Already, Crisis Clean is taking phone calls from residents in the areas affected, as well as in Bay of Michael, CA. As of  April 1, 2025, unclaimed work orders number over 15 million. The list of work orders is extensive, suggesting primarily moon rock muck outs, asteroid mitigation, mining of fool’s gold, and chainsaw operations to clear space debris. A quick reaction force of heavy equipment operators certified to operate Moon Rover Equipment (MRE) and Lunar Terrain Vehicles (LTV) will be deployed to clear lunar debris for the MOC and then to transport Greyshirt orbital responders between mining sites and the FOB, which will be located near the Sea of Tranquility.

Greyshirts looking to deploy on Operation Rubigeddon should visit Roll Call to submit their availability. Please include travel days and space suit size in your availability. You must be available to serve for at least 1 day if driving. Greyshirts within 450 miles will travel from their home of record to the rally point by POV. The operation launches April 1, 2025, and is expected to run to infinity and beyond.

With Operation Rubigeddon and the creation of the all-new MOC, Team Rubicon is excited to add asteroid defense and mitigation services—the most innovative new service offering since its founding in response to the Haiti earthquake of 2010—to its list of core capabilities.
