Team Rubicon Responds to Morocco Earthquake

Julie H. Case

Humanitarian aid volunteers have teamed up with a local nongovernmental organization to serve rural communities after the 6.8 magnitude temblor.

As Moroccans continue to dig out from the devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck on September 8, Team Rubicon has teamed up with a local nongovernmental organization to bring assistance to hard-hit and remote communities.

This week, after the Chichaoua province in the Marrakech-Safi region authorized Team Rubicon to provide support through the NGO Rawafid Humanitarian Association, the organization’s humanitarian aid volunteers—or Greyshirts—began arriving in Morocco.

In conjunction with the NGO Greyshirts are providing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services to assist survivors in rural communities in and around the Atlas Mountains. While there, the humanitarian aid volunteers will also train community leaders in WASH technology and skills. Because the Greyshirts arrived in the country as an EMT-Type 1 Mobile team, the volunteers could also have the capacity to transition into medical services in the future.
