TR UK Signs Off in South Carolina

Doug Clark

British Army veteran Doug Clark thanks members of Team Rubicon USA for introducing him to an "truly extraordinary family" on Operation: Palmetto Punch.

Paul Taylor and I from Team Rubicon UK are lying on our cot beds in the middle of a sea of Team Rubicon-shaped humanity in the billet in South Carolina State Guard Armory.

There is a veteran of Fallujah with his assistance dog lying next to us. Nine members of IsraAID joking and singing to our right. Three Vietnam vets a couple of bunks down. The HQ staff are mingled right through, and despite us going up in number by about 40 people in the last few days, everybody is chatting and laughing like they have all been mates for years. What a truly extraordinary family this is, what an effective team we are. What a privilege it is to be part of.

We have been here for ten days and we have both been made to feel like part of the team, indistinguishable by nationality. I can’t thank you enough. You will all see more volunteers from the UK in the future, and I am already envious of their deployments!
