So what’s it take to move an entire headquarters office in Los Angeles while simultaneously opening a National Operations Center in Dallas? This new chapter of Team Rubicon is an all-hands event, and we’d like to highlight the commitment of a few skilled volunteer members, generous sponsors, and anything-but-coffee-fetching interns.
For starters, ten members from across the country – Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin, and Colorado – deployed to Los Angeles to assist in the transition from our second office in El Segundo, CA to a new, state-of-the-art headquarters adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport.
Deployments for “Project Clutch Proposition” spanned from several days to a couple weeks, and they were 99.9% percent facilitated by our membership interns, who ensured volunteers were dispatched and received proper accommodations while away from home. (Currently seeking a high-speed volunteer support intern based in LA.)
With the guidance of CIO Steve Hunt, volunteers and VIPs from ITDRC assisted with various tech-related tasks to streamline the transition – more than just ensuring the lights, wifi, and coffee maker were working. We’re talking installing and completing all tech-related systems and cabling throughout our 10,000 square foot office. These essential tasks helped ensure TR employees could start getting shit done with a strong technology framework upon moving into the new space.
More awesome stuff tackled with volunteer support:
- Assembled TVs and mounts for all Video Teleconference (VTC) rooms and offices.
- Configured, set up, and tested electronics for our Bullpen – Mounted a 80” T and installed a sound bar.
- Broke down all tech equipment, organized, and transported to new office.
- Configured and utilized Salamander for tracking volunteer hours.
- Measured, cut, and ran cable to 31 desks for hard wire network connectivity.
- Set up, installed, and tested internet capability of entire office.
- Installed and customized server rack.
- Implemented Samanage to track national inventory.
- Setup and tested TeleHD Solution camera and sound system.
- Reinstalled operating system on all field computers.
- Created bootable thumb drives to reinstall operative drives to computers as needed.
- Carried out full inventory assessment of National’s technology related items.
- Completed a technology After Action Report (AAR) to be implemented for all disaster response operations and service projects to better assess capabilities and barriers within the technology field.
- Installed agent on all new computers a National Technology Management System, which will streamline all computer and software updates.
- Cloned and built out HQ Network.
- Configured routing and switches.
- Installed multiple wireless access points within the new office.
- Built housing units for cable trays and racked routers.
- Terminated a metric shit ton of Ethernet cables.
We’d be remiss not to mention the generous donations from Home Depot and the Ahmanson Foundation to help us outfit the new headquarters. And then there’s Priority Worldwide Services, who’ve been instrumental in helping us move and store operations-focused equipment in Dallas at very little cost.
