Forward Watch, July 24
Team Rubicon continues to lead the fight against food insecurity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Team Rubicon has 57 COVID-19 response operations underway with one more in the planning stages. Already, 212 operations have been completed. Greyshirts have distributed 24.3 million pounds of food in 126 communities across the country.
International: Nearly 15.5 million cases of COVID-19 and 634,000 related deaths have been reported worldwide. The UK’s Prime Minister said he thinks the country will move past the coronavirus crisis by mid-2021 but warned of a potential second wave. In Chile, officials have begun to roll back lockdown restrictions in the capital city of Santiago. Reports of new cases are on the rise in the nations of Oman, Bahrain, Panama, and South Africa.
United States: Roughly 4 million cases of COVID-19 and 144,000 related deaths have been reported in the U.S. Shortages of lab equipment have caused delays in COVID-19 testing and notification of results to patients. To solve this, the government has been called upon to invest in testing that doesn’t require specialized equipment or personnel. California, which early on appeared to have the outbreak under control, has overtaken New York as the state with the most reported COVID-19 cases.
How Team Rubicon is Responding to COVID-19
Team Rubicon is answering requests for assistance from local, state, and federal partners to support emergency humanitarian relief efforts in communities across the country. Our response focuses on ensuring access to nutrition, medical care, and essential government services for people who have been impacted by the pandemic. We’re putting safety first and following precautionary guidelines on every operation to protect the health of our volunteers and the communities they serve.
In addition to our organized operations, Greyshirts have performed 6,327 individual acts of service on a local level as part of our Neighbors Helping Neighbors initiative. They have also made 1,038 critical food deliveries to immunocompromised individuals and their families through the Emergency Food Assistance Program.
