Team Rubicon RAAM: Racer Biographies

Joseph Low is Team Captain for Team Rubicon RAAM. After serving 8 years in the United States Marine Corps, Joe received his MS in Biophysical Chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his JD from the McGeorge School of Law. He is currently a Trial Attorney who specializes in defending Military Personnel accused of combat crimes. As such he travels all over the world defending the Men and Women who serve our country. Originally from Portsmouth, VA, Joe currently lives in Los Angeles, CA with his wife, Monica, and 3 black labs, Samantha, Emma and Sophie.


Clay Hunt enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 2005. He went on to earn the coveted title of Marine Scout/Sniper and fought in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He is a recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat, and was honorably discharged from active duty in May of 2009. He is now attending college at Loyola Marymount University, where he will earn his degree in Athletic Training. His future plans include earning his Doctorate in Physical Therapy at USC, and continuing to play a vital role in the ground operations of Team Rubicon. Clay has also become highly involved with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, and has been featured in their nationwide PSA campaign in partnership with the Ad Council.


Haytham Faraj is a former Marine Corps Infantry officer who completed 22 years of active duty service. Born and raised in Lebanon, Haytham earned a law degree while in the Marine Corps and culminated his career as The Senior Defense Counsel at Camp Pendleton, California. Haytham has completed dozens of triathlons including several Ironman and half Ironman distance races. He has also completed numerous marathons and other road races, including the Wild West Relay race which is a 195 mile race through the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and Wyoming. Haytham now resides in the Detroit metro area and practices law.


Charles Macintosh is an avid endurance athlete and four-time USAT All-American. He has competed as a top amateur triathlete for over ten years with several overall victories, in addition to top age group finishes in the Escape from Alcatraz, New York City Triathlon, and the Chicago Triathlon. He has also completed several long distance rides, including an unsupported 1,100 mile ride from Vancouver, BC to Eureka, CA which fueled his desire to compete in RAAM. Charles holds a BA in Economics from Middlebury College where he was a collegiate hockey player and rower. He lives in NYC where he works as an MBS bond trader.


Chris Arthur has competed in numerous triathlons including the Tri the Creek in Denver, Co, and the Coeur d’Alene triathlon in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Chris runs a research laboratory at the Scripps Research Institute and in his spare time volunteers at the Muscular Dystrophy Association. His research focuses on solving the structures of proteins involved in drug resistance to cancer therapeutics, as well as proteins involved in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Mr. Arthur holds a B.S. in biology from Willamette University as well as a Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from the University of Colorado.


David Boire is a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, currently stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA as the 2/5 Echo Company Gunny. GySgt Boire has been on a total of 5 deployments serving in OIF 1 and 2. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star with V, Navy Achievement Medal with V, Navy Commendation Medal and 1 MEF Leadership Award. With his Bachelors Degree almost completed, GySgt Boire plans to attend Law School and become a Military defense Attorney. When not serving our country, he likes to spend his time with his 6 yr old son Anthony and his girlfriend Megan.


Zach Smith is a Firefighter/Paramedic for the City of Rocklin, California.   His experience includes search and rescue, vertical technical rescue, and ocean lifeguarding with the Los Angeles County Fire Dept. Zach has also served as a helicopter medic for the East Bay Regional Parks Police Department (CA.)  Zach is currently an Instructor for Peak Rescue Institute and is a recipient of the Carnegie Medal of Valor and the California State Firefighter Associacion Medal of Valor.  Zach has a BS in Kinesiotherapy from CSU Long Beach.
