Clem, an army vet of 20 years, clears debris.

Shawn Beidler, a former Marine Scout Sniper from Memphis, TN keeps a smile on everyone's face throughout the mission.

Tom and Shawn say goodbye as some of TR's vets leave Joplin.

This house was blown about 8 feet off its foundation. TR was searching through the house when a woman approached and asked if anyone knew the whereabouts of the woman who lived there - it was her sister looking for her. A neighbor heard and answered yes, the sister had survived and had been seen that morning. TR members were pumped to watch another "happy ending" take place.

Tim Fortney, Marine Scout Sniper, reflects on Day 4

It’s shocking being here. I can’t believe the magnitude of the destruction. Literally, how did anyone live? What’s been most memorable is seeing the owners of a house that is completely flat – and they were in it. How did they live?

Some of the most impressive things I’ve seen are all the American flags hanging everywhere – from huge flags tied to trees, to tiny flags stuck on branches, they’re everywhere and it’s really motivating. It’s also been interesting to see all the signs people have spray painted on the sides of houses. Signs like “Looters will be shot dead” and “Put down you camera and lend a hand.” It’s also been crazy to see houses that are completely off their foundation and destroyed – but a small part, like the fireplace, is still standing in perfect condition. Or a house that is blown apart but there is a picture still hanging perfectly aligned.

I joined TR because I missed the camaraderie of the Marines. The bonds you make with those guys are different, stronger than with anyone else. I flirted with the idea of going back into the military, but I decided I wanted to finish nursing school. TR has given me the chance to continue serving with good friends and use all my skills to help the people who need it the most, in times of crisis.

Team Rubicon Veterans help Vietnam Vet

Larry and his wife Mary Lynn were amazed at the quick response from TR. After seeing TR on NBC Nightly News, Larry, who recently had detached retina surgery and can’t do much physical activity, emailed TR asking for help.   This morning, he saw a response saying TR would be at his home at 0800. “it’s unreal,” he said, with tears in his eyes. “seeing all these guys who already served so much, come help us – it’s a wonderful deal.” Larry was in the 52nd airborne pathfinder detachment – a branch of the 52nd combat aviation battalion in Vietnam. He and Mary Lynn are both retired and said they feel “guilty” their home received fairly little damage as compared to other homes in the area. TR was thrilled to help this Salt Dog and his sweet wife after the storm.

Melvin and his wife Kathleen just purchased their Joplin home before the storm struck. TR helped them remove fallen trees and tarp/patch up their roof. At one point, Melvin, who had been working tirelessly with the TR guys on his roof, just stood still amidst all the action and said "I just don't know whether I'm coming or going." "That's why we're here," said a TR volunteer.

Nicole Green and Kathleen joke about all the damage to the house, while wondering how her garden of strawberries survived.
