China Denies TR’s Request; TR Chicago to Stand Down

You can view the letter submitted to the Chinese Embassy here:

China Request

Team Rubicon cannot deploy to China without the expressed written permission of the Chinese government. Team Rubicon Chicago is ready to deploy; however, without an official endorsement, TR Chicago is too likely to encounter major government resistance in entering the affected areas.  Team Rubicon thanks the Chinese government for considering our offer for aid, and respects its decision that the current disaster, with only 400 reported casualties, does not warrant our involvement.

TR On Alert; Seeking Permission From Chinese Officials

Team Rubicon’s Chicago element has been placed on alert.  Regional Coordinators Bob Thomann and Jeff Lang are currently organizing the area’s 40+ volunteers into a 8-10 person team.  As this is being written, William McNulty is attempting to speak to Chinese Officials in Washington, DC to discuss the option of TR deploying to the affected region in Western China.

TR in Marquette Magazine: First responder couldn’t refuse Jesuit’s call

First responder couldn’t refuse Jesuit’s call
Marquette Macazine
Fall 2010

Dr. Eduardo P. Dolhun achieved what few others could. He not only made it into Haiti three days after the Jan. 12 earthquake and before the airport opened to relief agencies, but he was one of the first Americans treating patients at the General Hospital of Port-au-Prince.

Bringing health care to far-off corners of the world isn’t new to Dolhun. In addition to his medical practice in San Francisco, he is a founding director of Doctors Outreach Clinics, an organization that forms health care partnerships with rural communities worldwide. DOC focuses on long-term solutions that pivot around relationships built over time. But the situation in Haiti required immediate action. When Jesuit Brother Jim Boynton — the vocation director for the Detroit Province of the Society of Jesus — telephoned, Dolhun knew he’d been recruited.

“I don’t know what training those Jesuits get to convince people to do things, but Jim mentioned my Marquette education and Father Wild, and that did it for me. I decided to go straight to the heart, straight to ground zero,” Dolhun says. (more…)

TR At the MilBlog Conference

Team Rubicon member William McNulty, and Board of Advisors members Gary Cagle and Matt Burden enjoy a few beers at the MilBlog Conference in Washington, DC.  Matt Burden is being awarded “Veteran’s MilBlog of the Year” for his site BlackFive.net.  It is extremely important that Team Rubicon continue to embrace the military and veteran community in order to ensure success in its missions.

Hogar De Cristo Thanks TR

This letter was sent to Team Rubicon Headquarters by the Catholic Order Hogar de Cristo, with whom Team Rubicon worked alongside while in Chile.  A Hogar de Cristo volunteer, Paulina, traveled alongside Team Rubicon while it conducted medical reconnaissance and triage operations throughout the devastated countryside.

Team Rubicon Meets With Ambassador Joseph

Team Rubicon President Jake Wood, along with Team Rubicon West Coast Volunteer Sam Chapetta, attended an event last night put on by the Artists and Athletes Alliance in conjunction with UCLA. Jake and Sam drove in to the Beverly Hills Four Seasons and enjoyed food and drinks while the Haitian Ambassador to the US, Raymond Joseph talked about what his country is doing to rebuild itself following the January 12 earthquake. “Haiti was poised to turn the corner before the earthquake. Now, with the entire world watching, we can ensure that we do this the right way, without the suspicion of corruption.” Ambassador Joseph emphasized that Haiti appreciates the help of the world’s NGOs and governments, but repeatedly stated, “We will not become The Republic of NGOs.” He stated at one point his country’s frustration with the lack of funding being channeled through official government channels, saying that while $2B has been raised for Haiti, the nation has only received $10M. “At one point our hospital needed $200,000 to ensure continuity of operations, but an NGO sitting on $70M in Haiti donations refused to lend us the money.”

Following the talk, Jake Wood and Sam Chapetta approached the Ambassador and thanked him for his crucial help in getting Team Rubicon inside Haiti in an expeditious manner. Ambassador looked at the letter Jake Wood was holding, a letter which he had signed nearly 3 months ago authorizing TR’s passage across the border, and smiled. “Thank you sir for coming to help my country.” He continued, “Your organization did a great service to the Haitian people.”

During the social mingling following the event, actress Kristen Bell (Heroes, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), expressed her admiration for what Team Rubicon accomplished, “What you guys did down there was awesome.” Kristen had just returned a few days prior from a brief trip to Port au Prince. She seemed to be quite knowledgeable about the situation there and expressed a genuine interest in helping the people of Haiti. She said goodbye with a solid, “Team Rubicon Rocks!”

FYI, TR Does NOT Rent $112,000/Day ‘Love Boats’

Follow the link for this outrageous story of abuse.

“The U.N. is spending over $10 million to house some of its Haiti relief workers on a pair of chartered cruise ships — one of which has been dubbed the “Love Boat” by U.N. staff — and some of the funds are going to a company closely linked to the government of Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez.”

TR Supporter ‘Blackfive’ Wins Milblog Award

Ardent Team Rubicon supporter, and Board of Advisors member, Matt Burden has recently accepted his fourth US Military Veteran Milblog of the Year award, presented by Milblogging.com.  Burden’s blog, Blackfive.net, is an important resource for military members, veterans and family members.  It provides access to what is really going on in the military and our current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Blackfive.net was behind Team Rubicon’s mission to Haiti from the very beginning, and was instrumental in spreading the word as TR deployed.

Congratulations to Matt and Blackfive.
